Population Habitat Modeling

The IWJV is committed to developing habitat objectives that are based on population objectives for priority species or groups of species. This entails understanding limiting factors, defining species-habitat relationships, conducting landscape characterization and assessment, and employing models that predict the extent and location of habitat needed to achieve population objectives. We are currently implementing two primary forms of population-habitat modeling:

  • Bioenergetic models for non-breeding (migrating and wintering) waterfowl and shorebirds.
  • Hierarchal All-Bird Strategy (HABS) Database to determine carrying capacity of upland habitats for landbirds in relation to that needed to support bird populations at continental goals.
