State Wildlife Action Plan Implementation
The IWJV Management Board identified the need to provide tangible assistance to state wildlife agencies in implementing the State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs). It approved a SWAP Implementation Initiative in 2008 to focus specifically on assisting states with implementation and the creation of a part-time SWAP Coordinator position. Although the SWAPs address the needs of fish and wildlife species of greatest conservation need (SGCN), birds are featured in all plans in the IWJV boundary. The goals of the Implementation Initiative are as follows:
- Assist state wildlife agencies in assembling partnerships and leveraging funds from existing federal and private sources for on-the-ground habitat conservation to achieve objectives identified in the SWAPs.
- Efficiently integrate IWJV bird conservation planning objectives and conservation design into SWAP implementation, including population-habitat modeling being developed by the Waterfowl, Shorebird, Waterbird and Landbird Science Teams.
- Identify opportunities for collaborative monitoring, evaluation and targeted research projects to accomplish IWJV and SWAP objectives.
