Sagebrush country is a patchwork of private and public lands as diverse as the people that work, live, and recreate here.
Fortunately, the sagebrush sea still functions as an intact working landscape, one of the few remaining in the world. It covers 14 states, stretching between the Great Plains and the Pacific Crest, and provides home and habitat to both people and wildlife.
We catalyze proactive, voluntary, and community-led sagebrush rangeland conservation, expanding success across both private and public lands.
We accomplish this by promoting healthy working lands in the American West for people and wildlife by using the latest science; by bringing partners, values, and resources together for a common purpose; and implementing on-the-ground actions.
The IWJV’s sagebrush work focuses on scaling up efforts to conserve intact and resilient sagebrush rangelands through proactive, science-based, landscape-scale management and stewardship across jurisdictional boundaries.
Our primary sagebrush work is done in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and hundreds of partners across the West via our Partnering to Conserve Sagebrush Rangelands initiative:
The IWJV and BLM does this work through five-year Intra-Agency Agreements (IAA) that focus on work to manage habitat for healthy wildlife populations, reduce wildfire risk and hazardous fuels, and expand efforts within priority watersheds across the West.

Through our partnerships we make on-the-ground conservation happen, we put science into practice, and we tell the story of partnership-driven sagebrush rangelands conservation across the West.
