It’s no secret that forest birds are facing steep declines across the West. Active management is one way for forest managers to help conserve important bird habitat, but with so many acres in need, it can be difficult to prioritize where conservation dollars and limited capacity can make the most difference. Data analyses that look at multiple factors, from species richness to priority restoration needs, can help narrow down the areas where it makes more sense to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
The Klamath Bird Observatory recently published one such synthesis of data on birds, climate, forests, and water across the West in the journal Avian Conservation & Ecology. This particular analysis has been particularly informative for the Intermountain West Joint Venture’s Western Forests work, and is now available to everyone.
