BLM and IWJV Workshop Woodland Management in Colorado

In early April, staff from the Intermountain West Joint Venture (IWJV) hosted workshops in western Colorado with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff focused on balancing management objectives in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Back-to-back workshops in Meeker, Montrose, and Grand Junction brought together fuels, wildlife, and other resource staff grappling with management challenges of habitat management and wildfire risk reduction in this unique landscape that hosts pinyon jays, sage grouse, wild horses, working cattle operations, oil and gas extraction, and recreation. Participants worked across disciplines in each gathering to integrate local knowledge and spatial data into landscape-scale planning of hazardous fuels management. In Meeker, our workshops coincided with a field tour put on by the Meeker Field Office focused on pinyon jays and fuels management. Highlights of the field tour included learning about the work the Meeker Field Office has been doing to manage pinyon jay habitat, seeing areas where jays were nesting, and enjoying cookies made with pinyon pine nuts. These workshops are part of the IWJV’s recent investments in the management of western forests and woodlands with an emphasis on wildfire risk reduction, relevance to rural communities, and wildlife habitat management. This work was made possible by the generous support of Colorado BLM and the University of Colorado Boulder.
